A joint Finnish – Russian wild forest reindeer project, which aimed to clarify the current condition of the wild forest reindeer populations in Karelia and Kainuu, and to intensify the cooperation on wild forest reindeer, was implemented in 2013-2014.

In Finland, 800 individuals in Kainuu, 2000 individuals in Suomenselkä and about 20 individuals in Seitseminen and Lauhanvuori National Parks (reintroduced populations).
